MORTIFICATION

You have a disciple
Who comes to you on his knees.
He combs your hair with his fingers,
Ties it into braids
And binds his wrists.
He sweeps the dust from your floors
And eats the leavings from your table.
He searches the night alone.
This is his method of achieving sainthood
In your eyes.
